Alarm Installation Tips for the Do It Yourselfer
August 5, 2009
Selecting the right product to fit the application is by far the best intrusion alarm installation tip any burglar alarm dealer can provide. Alarm system products can be purchased at your local home improvement store, or, if you are serious about buying a system that can be installed and programmed to notify a central station, on-call technician, or on-site security personnel, then purchasing a system from a reputable dealer may be the best choice. Alarm systems vary: hard-wired, wireless, and designing a combined hard-wired and wireless system. So, what does this mean? It means the difference between running cable from the control panel to each alarm device, or because of installation access constraints, installing wireless battery powered devices. If, exposed wire is taboo, then perhaps a wireless system should be considered. A wireless system requires less installation time. What are the system type tradeoffs? Not many. The cost is about the same for both system types, once you add in the installation materials, labor, and the hard-wired system components costs; the overall project cost is about equal to that of purchasing and installing wireless system components. Years ago, wireless equipment had a bad reputation: high cost, high volume of false alarms, and complicated programming instructions. Alarm manufacturers responded, making improvements restoring the integrity of their wireless product lines. Wireless systems and wireless devices are powered by batteries, so for heavily accessed doors and high traffic areas, both door contact and motion sensor devices may require frequent battery changes; however, batteries can be purchased for under $10.00 at most retail outlets. Combining both hard wired devices and wireless devices, seems to create a balance, with hard wired devices providing coverage during low battery trouble, and wireless devices providing coverage during temporary power outages. Both systems are powered through a plug-in transformer, with a 16.5VAC 40 VA output. Most all control panels support battery back-up with a 12VAC 4AH rechargeable battery.
